Name: Optix, Scoptix & Panoptix
Ability: Keen Eye
Moves: Mind Reader, Miracle Eye, Future Sight, Signal Beam
Evolution: Optix -(lv. 18)-> Scoptix -(Trade)-> Panoptix
“Optix will spend hours staring at seemingly nothing. Scientists have found that their vision is as strong as a microscope.”
“A Scoptix is capable of seeing through walls and other materials using its psychic vision. Periodically, one of its eyes will fall off and become an Optix.”
“Panoptix can use their psychic powers to peer into the minds of people and Pokemon to see their innermost thoughts. They are often used for surveillance.”
It’s been a couple weeks since I last updated this blog, and I’m sorry for the wait. In exchange, have some brand new fakemon designs, hot off the presses!
Also: will I ever settle on a consistent style for my digital art? Sources point to “no.”
It should be pretty apparent right now that I like Psychic types, and after playing too much Binding of Isaac and watching too much Gravity Falls I was inspired to make these creepy Illuminati eye monsters. But the main inspiration for their design is actually indicated in Panoptix’s name: the Panopticon.
The panopticon is a type of prison envisioned by the French philosopher and sociologist Michel Foucault. It involves a central guard tower with one-way mirrored windows and cell blocks surrounding it on all sides. The theory behind it is that, since the prisoners don’t know whether they are being watched at any given time, they will always act as if they are being observed, even when they are not. This same design has been used in other environments like hospitals. Now, with the onset of mass surveillance, each and every one of us is aware of the possibility of being watched, so we’re changing our behavior because of it…
Forgive me for getting a little sidetracked there; I study Sociology so I can be a big nerd about these things. Like many of my fakemon designs, I picked something I think is cool and simply extrapolated from that.
They’re also based on triangles (I like triangles), Platonic solids, and the Eye of Providence:
Not to mention, Panoptix bears more than a passing resemblance to a Bacteriophage:
Like many of my… odder designs, I looked at a handful of canon Pokemon for inspiration. Optix, Scoptix & Panoptix would probably get along well with:
(Not coincidentally, many of these are my favorites.)
In terms of in-game stats, I imagine them to be quite similar to the Abra line: heavy on Special Attack with flimsy defenses (I mean, does it look like it can take a hit?) Their evolutionary tree even follows the same pattern that Abra’s does. In case Panoptix gets a mega evolution (which I don’t have a design for, but it would be crazy), its ability would change to:
Omniscient: This Pokemon’s attacks can never miss.
With access to moves like Focus Blast and Zap Cannon, it becomes a powerful special sweeper.
That’s about all there is to say about these; I don’t have sprites for them at the moment, though I may sprite them soon. Again, I apologize for the long wait in between entries, I hope to get them out more frequently in the future.
How did you like these designs? Let me know in the comments!
Until next time,
