Faketober #3

Another week, another fresh, hot batch of Fakemon designs! As I’m typing up this description, I’ve got a butternut squash soup simmering on the stove… so I guess you could say I’m feeling the October spirit. But this isn’t a food blog! Let’s talk Pokemon!

Day 13 – Vampire

13 VilucardVilucard [dark/poison]
The Villainous Pokemon

Evolves from ??? @ Lv. 30+ during a New Moon

It constantly plots dastardly schemes to spread chaos and fear. However, its plans are always foiled by HEROLUNE.”

The Vampire and Werewolf lines are meant to be rivals — were always intended as such, which is why their prompts are consecutive in the list. But I ran into some trouble with deciding what to base their designs on at first; vampire bats are kind of overdone, so I experimented with different kinds of bloodsucking animals at first, like mosquitoes and leeches, until I decided on… a bat-cat thing. I already HAD a bat and a cat. Oops. But when I was thinking of themes that I could combine, I realized I’d never done a villain/hero duo… and so I combined that with dog/cat and vampire/werewolf to make Vilucard and Herolune simultaneously. I also based it a little on that purple cat guy from DBZ.

Vilucard is one of my favorite faketober mons thus far, at least in terms of what I like to draw. I just like to draw furries, I guess? It has a preevolution that I haven’t drawn yet — for a name, I’m thinking “Minyan” even though I’m cringing at the pun as I write this. I think I’d have this guy on my team. Its signature move, “Drain Life” is a Dark-type attack that heals the user for half of the damage dealt.

Day 14 – Werewolf
14 Herolune

Herolune [ground/fighting] The Vigilant Pokemon

Evolves from ??? @ Lv.30+ During a full moon

It rises with the moon to do battle with its sworn nemesis, VILUCARD. It has a strong sense of justice and will protect those who cannot defend themselves.”

I’m a cat person, but I know that they can be evil bastards sometimes, so a heroic dog seems like an obvious counterpart. Also, a werewolf would make for a cool super-powered alter ego, kind of like the Hulk. There’s no reason there can’t be a good and not-scary werewolf, right? Ground/Fighting counters Vilucard’s Dark/Poison so it seemed like a pretty good type combination; it’s also two types that have gone unused this far. From a certain angle, Herolune’s moon-shaped tail looks kind of like a superhero’s cape, which I’m gonna pretend was intentional. My canon Pokemon inspirations for this guy’s design were Lucario and Hawlucha.

He has a pre-evo also, probably a ground type puppy. A “mild-mannered alter ego,” if you will. I plan to draw it soon.

Day 15 – Frankenstein

15 Junkenscrap

Junkenscrap [steel/electric]
The Scrap Metal Pokemon

Does Not Evolve

“It salvages discarded appendages from other Steel-types, which it attaches to its own body. It holds itself together with a strong magnetism.”

Yeah, I know that Frankenstein is the doctor, not the monster! I’ve read the book, I’ll have you know. Since Frankenstein’s monster is stitched together using parts from other bodies and given life via lightning, I thought a robotic creature that was made of parts of other robots would be a fun twist. I was kind of surprised when I looked into Steel-type Pokemon and I found out that only a few of them were properly robotic. Most Steel-types are actually animals whose bodies are coated in metal; they are very much living creatures. The Magnemite and Klink lines are really the closest it gets; there’s no true “robot” pokemon (yet). So I had to make do with what I could find, and I included parts from some of my own fakemon, too.

These are all the Pokemon whose parts were borrowed for Junkenscrap’s design: Steelix (jaw); Magnemite (magnet neck); Bronzong (body); Klink (shoulders); Metagross (right arm); and my own fakemon Tracton (which you might recognize from Uranium version) which provided the left arm and tire treads.

If you could find this guy in a game, I imagine it would come in several different varieties using different body parts, but I’m not gonna spend time drawing those so you can use your imagination.

Day 16 – Spider

16 Scubell

Scubell [bug/water]
The Deep Diver Pokemon

Evolves from ???

It stores pressurized air in its abdomen that enables it to breathe underwater for hours at a time. When threatened, it propels itself away with a forceful blast of bubbles.”

Based on a Diving Bell Spider, another seriously cool animal that really should be a Pokemon already, and a diver suit. A friend of mine drew a comparison to Treasure Knight from Shovel Knight; I was thinking more of a Big Daddy from Bioshock, but that works too I guess.

When I was working on this design, I researched lots of other cool kinds of spiders that I could use. There are currently just two spider Pokemon — Ariados and Galvantula — which leaves a whole host of untapped opportunities. Some of the other options I considered were a Daddy Longlegs and a Net-Casting spider, the latter of which is also an incredibly cool creature which could EASILY become a Pokemon, so somebody snap that up quick! Spiders are awesome, I’ve always liked them ever since I read Charlotte’s Web as a kid.

Day 17 – Doll

17 Plusheem->08 Dreamare

Plusheem [fairy/normal] -> Dreamare [fairy/dark]
The Toy Pokemon

“Its soft, huggable look makes it popular among small children. Its body contains a squeaker that makes noise when it’s squeezed. When it doesn’t get attention, it squeaks mournfully.”

“Wait a minute,” you say, “I’ve seen that one before!” Yeah, Plusheem is a pre-evolution for #08 Dreamare. It’s a stuffed toy that’s alive, but before it turns evil. I wanted it to look like something straight out of Dr. Seuss, or Monsters Inc. I guess. I suppose the whole “haunted-doll-turns-evil” thing has been done before with Banette, but this is different, because it’s not a ghost, right? RIGHT??? Ah, hell. It’s cute anyway.

Day 18 – Haunted House

18 MausolurkMausolurk [ghost/rock]
The Crypt Pokemon

Evolves from ???

“As its powers grow, its home crumbles around it until it disintegrates entirely. When this happens, it searches for a new haunt – forcing out its previous inhabitants if necessary.”

This design took me a really long time, and I’m still not completely happy with it. I even spent a long time doodling haunted houses in my sketchbook, trying to understand the architecture before settling on this design. Mainly I’m concerned with how the face looks way too much like Spiritomb… and also for practical reasons, it would be impossible for this thing to move around! I do like the idea of a hermit crab-esque ghost Pokemon, though…

I do take some refuge in the fact that this is the final stage of a 3-stage line. Its preevolutions have designs which I like a lot more but I’m not showing them yet. (You can probably guess which prompt they’ll be for.)

Day 19 – Candy

19 Candelite

Candelite [fairy]
The Sweet Pokemon

Does Not Evolve

“It carries an endless supply of sugary treats in the basket on its tail. Eating them can give you a temporary boost, but consuming too much can have adverse effects on one’s health and mental state.”

Awww, it’s so cute! Taking a break from the creepy designs, here’s one that’s inspired by my other favorite thing about October: eating enough sugary treats to enter into a food coma. Fittingly, Candelite’s signature ability is Sugar Rush, which acts like Speed Boost only it affects all Pokemon on Candelite’s side of the field. It also learns lots of different moves that give stat boosts to its allies. If Pokemon were more like League of Legends, its roll would be Support.

Also yeah its wings are candy wrappers. Where does the endless supply of candy come from? I don’t know! Fairy magic maybe.

That’s all for today; there will be 2 more entries after this, one with #20-27 and another with #28-31, the three legendaries. We’re closer than ever to Halloween! Scary stuff!

Keep it spooky everybody!

Faketober! #2

My Faketober art challenge — one new fakemon a day, on a Halloween theme — is going strong! In case you’re unaware, you can read up on the details in my previous journal entry. Here are the next batch of spooky designs:

Day 5 – Skeleton

05 Muertosa

Muertosa [grass/ghost]
The Memorial Pokemon

Evolves from Roselia w/ Dusk Stone

The scent of its roses is said to bring back memories of lost loved ones. Their flowers are traditionally left on graves.”

Notes: Muertosa is based on a Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) skeleton. Its name comes from “Muerte” (death) & “Rosa” (rose). I thought making a new evolution for an existing Pokemon would be cool, and Roselia fit the theme the most. Not sure whether I’ll include more evolutions of canon ‘mons in the future.

Day 6 – Swamp Thing

06 Dreadmire

Dreadmire – [water/dark]
It is a cold-blooded predator that dwells in bogs and swamps. It sneaks up on its prey silently, then opens its cavernous jaws to swallow it whole.

Notes: Dreadmire is a fully evolved Pokemon, I plan to design 2 pre-evolutions for it. I don’t have very much else to say about this one; it rather speaks for itself.

Day 7 – Zombie

07 Corpspore

Corpspore – [poison/???*]
A parasitic Pokemon that inhabits dead bodies. It is constantly searching for a bigger, stronger host so that it can better spread its spores.

*It takes on its secondary typing from whatever the host body is.

Notes: Ahhh yes. Corpspore is thus far the most popular and most controversial of my faketober designs. In case the art and Dex didn’t make it clear, it is too small and weak to fight on its own and must reanimate the corpses of other Pokemon. It is not very intelligent; its only desire is to reproduce through whatever means necessary. It sets the stage for a zombie apocalypse, Pokemon-style.

When designing it, I first thought about how a zombie Pokemon should function. I quickly discarded the idea that it should be a humanoid zombie (a la Minecraft, Left 4 Dead, etc.) Then I decided that the Pokemon itself should be the parasite; this gave me an excuse to draw a cool zombified Charizard. Visually, I based it on a mushroom and a squid.

A lot of people were confused how this thing would function in a game. To be clear, I don’t plan to include these designs in any game project right now; however, in-game, I would imagine it would switch hosts in the same way Rotom does, by interacting with objects in the overworld. Such a game would require there to be dead bodies of Pokemon lying around… that’s a little too morbid, I think! So this guy’s just a concept. For now anyway…

Day 8 – Monster

08 Dreamare

Dreamare – [fairy/dark]
The Night Terror Pokemon

“It lurks in people’s bedrooms at night, often hiding in closets or under beds, feeding off energy from dreams. If it feeds on you, you’ll surely experience a petrifying nightmare. It prefers the dreams of small children.”

Notes: My concept for this guy was “Monster Under The Bed”. I wanted to draw something kinda goofy-looking but that would completely terrify a young child. I gave it a kinda psychedelic, Dr. Seuss vibe, and removed its eyes to make it even more unsettling. The stitches are on its body because it hides in beds and closets of children’s rooms, pretending to be a harmless stuffed toy.

Not sure whether to give it an evolution or a preevolution.

Day 9 – Clown

09 Jestorb

Jestorb – [psychic/fire]
The Joker Pokemon

“It has great Pyrokinetic abilities combined with a merciless and sadistic nature. It enjoys setting its enemies on fire and laughing maniacally as they burn.”

Notes: Clowns are creepy! Fire clowns are even creepier! Not gonna lie, I was kind of inspired by Hisoka from Hunter X Hunter for this guy’s design. …What? He’s an evil clown!

Day 10 – Jack-O-Lantern

02 Stumpkin 10 Hollostump

Stumpkin [grass] -> Hollostump [grass/fire]

Evolves at level 16

It slumbers in the earth all day long, absorbing and concentrating the sun’s energy into the brilliant fire that burns inside of it.”

Notes: There are several prompts that I designed to make it easy to create an evolutionary line. Combining 2 concepts into 1 design can often make that design stronger, and I wanted to encourage faketober participants to do exactly that. Pumpkin to Jack-O-Lantern is a pretty logical progression, I think.

I’m still not totally 100% satisfied with my decision to make Hollostump a Fire type. I envisioned these as the Grass starters of whatever region this is, although Grass/Fire is quite an unusual type for a starter Pokemon. However, Grass/Ghost (the next most likely option) is already taken by Muertosa; I promised myself not to make any repeat types. Also, Grass/Ghost would make it too similar to the other jack-o-lantern Pokemon. I tried hard to make this design as distinct from Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist as I possibly could. So, Grass/Fire type it is.

Days 11-12 – Imp & Demon

11 Devimp & Fallengel

12 Beliaddon

The Imp Pokemon
“A Pokemon that is said to originate from a separate plane of existence. It is very curious about the world around it and often gets into mischief as a result.”

The Hellion Pokemon
“It acts like a soldier, obeying orders without hesitation. It seems to have no moral compass and will do whatever its master commands.”

The Infernal Pokemon
“Its kind came out of a fiery chasm which contained an otherworldly portal. A furnace hotter than the sun burns within its chest. If it burns you, the pain will never go away.”

Devimp [fire] -(lv16)-> Fallengel [fire/dragon] -(lv36)-> Beliaddon [fire/dragon]

Notes: Game Freak can never make a Satan dragon Pokemon in their games. But I can!!!!

I’ve wanted to do a demonic Pokemon for a while because I think demons are cool. Dragons are cool also, and the Devil is commonly associated with dragons, so it was an effortless combination. Boy, I had a good time designing & drawing “Charizard from Hell”.

These guys are the fire starters of the Tober region… although that’s not exactly fair to the other starters, since they would easily be the most popular choice.

…Oh, yeah, I’ve named the region that all these fakemon are in the Tober Region. Get it? Puns!

That’s all the Fakemon for now. But remember, though, that I’m posting new ones just about every day on my Twitter @voluntarytwitch and my tumblr oripoke. Remember! Anyone is welcome to make fakemon designs for Faketober. I want to see all the cool & creepy ideas people will come up with!

Stay spooky,

Faketober Art Challenge! #1

faketober logo

Hey all! Can you believe it’s been more than a year since I started this blog? Even though I neglect it sometimes, it’s been great to have a platform where I could display my fakemon art and talk about the inspiration behind it. Not only that, but the feedback I’ve received from everybody who has commented is a great motivator. Hearing that I’ve inspired people to try designing their own fakemon or make their own fangame is humbling, and I’m so glad that I’m able to do that. I hope that this next year will be just as prolific!

…Now, enough with the sappy stuff. On to the purpose of this blog entry! Now, I know it’s October 4th so I’m a little late to the party, but I will be attempting a 31-day Art Challenge this month, with the goal of posting at least 1 new Fakemon a day.

The following are my (self-imposed) rules for the challenge.

  • At least 1 Fakemon a day
  • All 18 Types must be included
  • No repeat type combinations
  • Evolutions are optional

And of course, this being October, all of my fakemon will be Halloween-themed! I love a good spook, and this is the perfect chance to make some twisted yet memorable fakemon designs. Here are the prompts that I am giving myself for each day of the month:

  1. Ghost
  2. Pumpkin
  3. Bat
  4. Cat
  5. Skeleton
  6. Swamp Thing
  7. Zombie
  8. Monster
  9. Clown
  10. Jack o’ Lantern
  11. Imp
  12. Demon
  13. Frankenstein
  14. Vampire
  15. Werewolf
  16. Spider
  17. Doll
  18. Haunted House
  19. Candy
  20. Raven
  21. Scarecrow
  22. Wendigo
  23. Headless Horseman
  24. Revenant
  25. Mutant
  26. Slime
  27. Slenderman
  28. Grave
  29. Legendary
  30. Legendary
  31. Legendary

As a secondary goal, I’m going to try to make this feel like a cohesive mini-dex… I’d like to have starters, some “rival” lines, and of course… legendaries!

Now, given that I have classes and other real-life obligations that can get very demanding, I’m not 100% positive that I can complete this, but nevertheless I will try my best, for you guys and also for me!

Since it’s October 4 already, let’s get started with the first 4 of the dex!

#01. Ghost

01 Sadrench

Sadrench – [ghost/water]
The Sunken Pokemon

Dex: Its hands are always clammy cold and dripping. They lurk by the shore at night and try to drag unsuspecting passersby underwater.

Based on: sheet ghosts and The Ring

#02. Pumpkin

02 Stumpkin

Stumpkin – [grass]
The Pumpkin Pokemon

Dex: They sleep during the day in pumpkin patches. At night, they pull themselves out of the earth and dance in the light of a bonfire.

#03. Bat

03 Echolone

Echolone [normal/flying]
The Bat Pokemon

Dex: They are almost entirely blind, but have incredible hearing. They can release a concussive sound wave from their mouth and “see” with the vibrations it causes.

04. Cat

04. Plupoe & Poegalow

Plupoe & Poegalow [dark]
The Black Cat Pokemon / The Gallows Pokemon

Dex1 (Plupoe): Despite its affectionate nature and easygoing temperament, they are not recommended as pets because they will slowly drive their owners insane.

Dex2 (Poegalow): Said to be an ill omen, they will stalk people who have committed a terrible crime and will not let up until their target goes mad.

Based on: Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Black Cat, which is really good and seriously spooky, so go read it. I kind of cheated on this one, because this is a design that I’ve had for years! However, it hasn’t seen the light of the internet until now.

I even made a sprite of it.

…Phew! That’s a lot of drawing! That’s all for today. I don’t really like doing daily posts, so I’ll probably do weekly updates instead. Also, if anybody reading this is interested in taking some of these prompts and trying their own Faketober, I absolutely encourage it!

Until next time: Stay spooky!
